Zinc, Stress and the Immune System

You are overworked, stressed, constantly finding yourself coming down with illness and all of your blood test results come back within the acceptable range….Sound familiar?

Our immune system and our body’s stress resilience centre called HPA (Hypothalamus, Pituitary Gland, Adrenal Glands) axis are intricately linked. You may be familiar with adrenal fatigue where the body is overworked, cortisol is constantly being released resulting in fatigue of the adrenal glands which then has a flow on negative affect to the pituitary, hypothalamus, hormones and overall health.  The immune system can become compromised when our inbuilt adaptive resilience system is under fire resulting in vitamin and mineral deficiency. Zinc is a critical co-factor by more than 100 enzymes within the body, in particular the protein haemoglobin and the immune system.

Could you be zinc deficient? Zinc deficiency once was uncommon however is now the 5th leading cause of deteriorating health affecting over 2 billion people worldwide.  Our aging population records have shown a staggering 30% of the elderly are zinc deficient and zinc deficiency results in decreased immune system.

Zinc facts:

  • Is a trace element
  • Almost every cell in the body needs zinc
  • Stabilises cell membranes helping to strengthen against free radicals
  • Supports healthy resilience to internal and external stressors
  • Promotes healthy brain chemistry
  • Is part of the protein haemoglobin which carries oxygen in the blood
  • Regulates the immune system from overactive or suppression
  • Acts together with platelets in blood clotting
  • Affects thyroid function
  • Vital for the sense of taste
  • Impacts learning and behaviour and
  • Both deficiency and toxicity symptoms can cause debilitating symptoms.

If you think you may be zinc deficient, mention this during your next consultation and we can do a simple on invasive test with immediate results.
