A few years ago I was asked to speak at a local retirement village/elderly home. As much as I shared with them, each and every person shared with me, it was such a privilege . They all have amazing life stories, some happy, some not so happy, regrets, highs and low but most of all they are entitled to dignity & quality life until that last breath on this earth.
Armed with a basket full of fresh fruit, this is what I shared that day with staff stopping, sitting and joining in our morning chat.
We are all different, We are all unique. We all have opinions and views that sometimes we may, or may not agree with. So in saying that I picked up each piece of fruit interpreting and describing how the fruit can be a communication tool.
Pineapple – A pineapple has a rough, prickly outer skin with soft damageable flesh and a solid core. In life we have a firm foundation, solid core of morals, character. As years go by we get knocked and bruised & left unresolved will causes our outer skin to be come prickly. Is there anyone you know who is prickly?
Banana – Take a second look at the shape of a banana. Doesn’t it remind you of an old fashion telephone receiver? How often do we take the time to give someone a call just to say “Hi, how are you?” Remember the old saying do unto others as you want them to do to you. A moment on the phone just might make that persons day turn around to be a little brighter. Okay some of you here might have your phone privileges revoked for being naughty hehehehehe.. but that doesn’t stop you from writing a letter and asking a staff member to pop it in the post.
Apple – Are you a pear shape or an apple shape? Gosh the media tells us our body shape and how to dress to suit our figure. Okay so we have our outside looking fine, how about the insides? Are we an apple inside too, rotten or fresh to eat. Now I know you’re all thinking sexy 😉 but this is about our attitude. Just as we can maintain our fitness by exercising, we also need to maintain our attitude to an acceptable altitude. We are not talking about a bad day but a constant negative attitude will effect everyone around disturbing the atmosphere. There is nothing worst than walking into a thick cloud of depression. On the other hand a positive attitude brings LIFE, LIGHT, JOY & FUN. Be a bright beam of light in a dark place. Let your light shine.
Lemon – Lemons are bitter and sour but beautifully yellow. Sometimes bad circumstances happen, life just sucks there are no two ways about it but there are two ways to deal with it through: get better or get bitter. When a person is going through a really hard time it is hard to see clearly and reflect however when coming out of the valley on the way up why not make lemons into lemonade. Take a moment to see a positive and use that to propel forward. Don’t let the circumstances define you. Lemons are sour but when squashed, pits removed, a dash of juice and sugar added all that is needed is ice. Can you see the similarities in your own life? Been squashed? Turn around the bad to a good, help others in an a similar situation. Lemons in a lemonade.
Grapes – Grapes are grown on a vine and in bunches. We are all connected in some way, shape or form. My friend knows your cousins sisters son-inlaw. LOL. Seriously though we bounce or rub each other just like a bunch of grapes that are well seasoned ripe for a bigger picture.
Tomatoes – now we don’t put them in a fruit salad however they do have relevance. We have all read the symbolism of the tomato, cut in half resembles heart chambers. Tomatoes are great for our physical heart but I always say we need to protect our emotional heart as much as our virginity. Once our virginity is gone it’s gone, once our heart has been broken it may never be the same. Our emotional heart needs to be preserved as much as our innocence. It’s a tad too late for some of us guarding our virginity hehehehehe… we can share this symbol with our children and grandchildren.
Watermelon – Each fruit has a green hard outer shell with soft watery flesh and black seeds growing on an invasive vine growing to at least 5 mts in length. Green = greed when explaining emotions to children. Our $100.00 note is green. We relate a watermelon to greed. The green outer shell is hard and thick. Once it has cracked the crack will continue full circle revealing the soft internal flesh with seeds. The soft flesh is the hurt with the seeds unresolved issues. Once greed takes a hold it can be difficult ‘crack’ but not impossible. Focussing on the bigger picture rather than material possessions or gambling requires some qualified assistance. Don’t get too caught up being materialistic everything fades away.
There were many more fruits we discussed, oranges, kiwi fruit, passionfruit then the kitchen staff took the full basket away ready to cut up for morning tea.
Next time you are buying the weekly fruit and vegetables think about our morning together. You won’t look at fruit the same again 🙂
Stay tuned for more on communication….
